Introduction
Demographic information specialists Experian have made available 3 of their popular datasets to the UK Academic Sector. The data described in this overview are provided for use via this ESRC/JISC website for use under their licence conditions at Super Output Area (SOA) level. Data available are:
- Mosaic Public Sector household counts for each SOA.
- Total household counts for each SOA.
- Median household income value for each SOA.
- Population projections, by gender and 5 year age bands, for year of release, 5 and 10 years into the future, for each SOA.
These datasets have been aggregated to Super Output Area level. For a description of Super Output Areas see the National Statistics Geography website.

Description of data
Mosaic Public Sector
Experians first classification system designed specifically to support public sector policy decisions, communications activity and resource strategies. Its comprehensive analysis of citizens at postcode and household level provides deep insight into the socio-demographics, lifestyles, culture and behaviour of UK citizens.
It is a classification that paints a rich picture of the UK population in terms of their socio-demographics, lifestyles, behaviours and attitudes at the start of the 21st century.
Some of the key features of Mosaic Public Sector are:
- Uniquely in the UK, the classification operates consistently at both postcode and household level, thereby identifying differences between neighbours.
- Over 400 data items have been used to create Mosaic Public Sector, with a careful balance between Census data and data that is updated annually. Data categories include:
- Demographics
- Socio-economics and consumption
- Financial measures
- Property characteristics
- Property values
- Locational measures
- Qualititative validation has ensured that the output from the analytical process accurately reflects reality on the ground. In particular, site visits were made to 92% of the Postal Districts in the country to verify that the classification captures the key population trends that have occurred in recent years.
- Extensive documentation and visualisation support materials, including a full multimedia guide, help users to interpret the results of their analysis.
Median Household Income
Experian has used a multi-stage process to create models that predict personal and household income. Using data from a number of surveys, including MORI’s Financial Tracking Survey, models were developed to predict personal income for a number of standard employment types. These were then accumulated to create household income based on the composition of the household.
Appropriate calibration has been used throughout the process to sources such as Census (for employment types at OA level) and the Expenditure and Food Survey.

Population Projections
Using methodologies developed in accordance with JICPOPs (Joint Industry Council for Population Standards), Experian have produced contemporary estimates, as well as five-year and ten-year projections of resident populations split by gender and age.
