Job vacancy - Mimas Development Officer (CAIRD Project)fixed term for one year

Mimas is a national data centre supported by JISC and the ESRC and hosted by The University of Manchester. The Census Dissemination Unit (CDU - cdu.mimas.ac.uk), based within Mimas, provides access to, and support for the use of the aggregate statistics outputs from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 UK censuses. The CDU also provides a variety of additional census-related datasets and services to its users.

The CAIRD (Census Aggregate Information Resource Demonstrator) Project aims to create a demonstrator system that will combine data and metadata from the UK 2001 Census through the use of developments in open-standards structured XML, and XML-aware database systems to create a machine-readable, application-ready online service. The main aim of the CAIRD project is to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach in order to encourage adoption of similar methods by the national census agencies for aggregate outputs from the UK 2011 Census.

You should have: a good honours degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or experience in an equivalent role; strong IT skills; experience of manipulating large and complex datasets; use of Excel for data manipulation including the use of functions; experience of XML and related technologies (such as XSLT); Microsoft SQL Server experience. In addition you will have excellent organisational skills and a flexible, enthusiastic and proactive approach to work.
