1991 Census

Background

The 1991 United Kingdom Census was conducted on the night of the 21st of April 1991. In England and Wales the work was carried out by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS), in Scotland by the General Registrars Office for Scotland (GROS) and in Northern Ireland by the Census Office, Northern Ireland (CONI). Some 118,000 enumerators were employed to carry out the census, delivering forms, helping to fill them in and collecting them for return. Around twelve miles of shelving were required to house the completed forms. The census cost around £140 million in 1991, this equates to about £7 per household or £2.50 per head.
