Surpop V2.0: Introduction

Surpop provides access to a set of population estimates for 200m cells derived from the 1981 Census of Population in England, Wales and Scotland, and the 1991 Census in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The data are available only to registered users of the census datasets. Extracts of the data for selected census variables may be downloaded for user-specified geographical areas in a variety of output file formats suitable for use in geographical information systems (GIS) software or users' own programs.

The original development of the England, Wales and Scotland data and Surpop was supported by Economic and Social Research Council award A507265014 and undertaken by David Martin and the late Ian Bracken, assisted by Richard Gascoigne. The Northern Ireland datasets and Surpop V2.0 were supported by ESRC award R000222045 and developed by David Martin and Nick Tate, assisted by Jason Sadler.
