About CommonGIS

This step by step tutorial is intended to guide you through using the CommonGIS interface to visualise census data.

It assumes you already have the necessary skills to extract census data using the Casweb interface. If not, please view the Casweb help pages.

The data selected for this tutorial is from Great Britain Small Area Statistics (SAS) component of the outputs from the 1991 United Kingdom Census of Population. The variables shown below from Table 08 of the SAS (Economic Position of residents aged 16 and over) were extracted for all districts in the Metropolitan Counties of Inner London (code 01) and Outer London (code 02). The variables were renamed within Casweb as follows:

  • Variable 01 (code ST08001 renamed to 01MO16) - Males
  • Variable 12 (code ST08012 renamed to 12MO16) - Economically active males
  • Variable 67 (code ST08067 renamed to 67MO16) - Males on a government scheme
  • Variable 78 (code ST08078 renamed to 78MO16) - Unemployed males
